When she arrived at the village, the sun was high, and the sounds of everyday life filled the air. Women were at the well gathering water, children ran through the fields, and the men were working in the crops. It all seemed so ordinary, yet Zuri knew that everything was about to change. Her steps quickened as she made her way to her family’s home.

Her mother greeted her at the entrance, eyes wide with relief and confusion. “Zuri, where have you been? We’ve been worried.”

Zuri took her mother’s hands, feeling the familiar warmth of home. “I had to leave for a time,” she said softly, “to seek the truth. And I found it.”

Her mother looked at her curiously, her brow furrowed. “What do you mean, Zuri?”

“I found God, Mother. The One true God, through His Son, Jesus Christ. He is real, and He has called me to follow Him.”

Her mother stepped back, shock and worry written across her face. “Zuri, be careful. These are dangerous words. Our people honour the ancestors. To speak of a new God, to follow a new way… you risk angering the spirits.”

Zuri felt her heart tighten. She knew this would be her family’s reaction, but it didn’t lessen the pain. “Mother, I understand your fear, but I’ve experienced His love. I’ve felt His presence. This is not about rejecting our people’s ways but about embracing the truth. He offers life, forgiveness, and hope that goes beyond what we know.”

Her mother shook her head, eyes filled with concern. “You’re speaking like a stranger, Zuri. This is not the daughter I raised.”

Before Zuri could respond, her father entered, followed by her brother. They, too, noticed the change in her—the determination in her eyes, the peace in her voice. “What’s going on here?” her father asked, sensing the tension. The Rift Between Worlds

Her father’s face darkened. “Zuri, enough of this. We do not abandon the ways of our ancestors. What you are saying can bring shame upon our family. We have lived in peace, honouring the spirits. Do not bring this trouble into our home.”

Zuri’s heart ached, but she stood her ground. “Father, I am not bringing trouble. I am bringing the truth that I have seen with my own eyes and felt in my heart. Jesus is the light, and He has called me to share that light with our people.”

Her brother stepped forward, his voice softer than their father’s. “Zuri, I know you believe what you’re saying, but the village won’t accept this. They will turn against you. We don’t understand this Jesus you speak of.”

Tears welled up in Zuri’s eyes, but she did not let them fall. “I know you don’t understand now, but I must obey the call I’ve been given. I love all of you, but I cannot deny what God has done in my life.”

Silence fell over the room. Her father’s face was hard, her mother’s eyes filled with sadness, and her brother stood between them, torn. The weight of rejection pressed on Zuri, but she knew this was part of her journey. Jesus had faced rejection, and now so would she.

“I will pray for you all,” she said quietly. “And I will continue to follow the path God has set before me.”

With that, Zuri turned and left her family’s home, her heart heavy but resolute. She knew that following Christ would not be easy, but the peace in her soul reminded her that she was not alone. Jesus was with her, guiding her every step.

Outside, she saw the familiar faces of her friends and neighbours. Whispers began to spread as people noticed the cross around her neck and the determination in her stride. Zuri knew that the village would soon hear of her newfound faith, and the opposition would follow. But she was ready.

As the day wore on, Zuri found herself at the foot of the old Baobab tree, where the village elders would often meet. It was a place of council, tradition, and respect. She knew that if her message was to be heard, this was where it had to begin.

She took a deep breath and prayed silently for strength. Then, as the elders began to gather, Zuri stood tall, ready to share the truth of Jesus with her people—no matter the cost.
