Each morning, she prayed by the river, seeking strength from the Lord and asking for guidance. She knew that change would not come easily, but she trusted that God had planted her in the village for a reason. She needed to be patient and steadfast.
It was on one such morning, as she knelt by the river, that she heard footsteps approaching. Startled, Zuri looked up to see a familiar face – it was Amani, her childhood friend. Amani had always been a quiet girl, but she was kind-hearted and gentle. Zuri hadn’t spoken to her since she returned to the village, and she was surprised to see her now.
“Amani,” Zuri greeted her, standing up. “It’s good to see you.”
Amani hesitated for a moment, then stepped closer. “Zuri, I’ve heard the things people are saying about you… about Jesus. Is it true? Did you really hear God speak?”
Zuri smiled softly. “Yes, Amani, it’s true. I heard His voice, and He called me to follow Him.”
Amani’s eyes flickered with curiosity. “What is He like? This Jesus you speak of… I’ve heard of Him from travellers, but no one here knows much about Him.”
Zuri’s heart lifted. Finally, someone was asking, someone was open. “Jesus is the Son of God,” she explained gently. “He came to this world to show us God’s love and to save us from our sins. He died on the cross, but He rose again, defeating death. Through Him, we can have eternal life. His love is like nothing I’ve ever known.”
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, – Romans 8:16 (NKJV)
Amani sat down by the riverbank, her face thoughtful. “I’ve always felt… like there was something more, you know? Our ways, the spirits, they feel distant sometimes. I want to believe what you’re saying, but I’m afraid. What if the ancestors are angry?”
Zuri sat beside her, understanding her fears. “I was afraid at first, too. But when I accepted Jesus, I felt a peace that took away all that fear. The ancestors do not hold the power over life and death—only God does. He created everything, and His love for us is greater than any fear.”
Amani sat quietly, her hands resting on her knees, as she looked out over the river. After a long pause, she turned to Zuri, her eyes wide with sincerity. “Can you teach me more? I want to understand this Jesus you speak of.”
Zuri felt a surge of joy. She had prayed for this moment, and now it was happening. “Of course, Amani,” she said, her voice filled with warmth. “We can pray together, and I can tell you more about His life and His teachings.”
For the next few hours, Zuri and Amani sat by the river, talking about Jesus, His miracles, and His message of love and redemption. Amani listened intently; her eyes filled with wonder as she began to grasp the depth of the gospel. As they spoke, Zuri felt the presence of the Holy Spirit guiding her words, giving her the wisdom she had prayed for.
By the time they finished, the sun was high in the sky, casting long shadows across the water. Amani stood, her face glowing with hope. Amani stood, her face glowing with hope. “It feels as though my heart is finally ready,” she said softly, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and hope. “I want to follow Jesus.”
…I tell you that in the same way, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. – Luke 15:7 (NIV)
Tears welled up in Zuri’s eyes. “Then let’s pray together.”
They knelt by the riverbank, and Zuri led Amani in a prayer of surrender, asking Jesus to enter her heart and guide her life. As they prayed, Amani’s face softened, and Zuri could see the peace of God settling over her.
When they stood, Amani hugged Zuri tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered. “I feel… free.”
Zuri smiled, knowing exactly what she meant. “This is just the beginning, Amani. Jesus has a plan for your life, just as He has for mine. We will walk this journey together.”
As they made their way back to the village, Zuri felt a new strength rising within her. Amani’s decision to follow Christ was the first sign that God was working in her people’s hearts. It was only a small spark, but Zuri knew that even the smallest flame could grow into a fire that would spread far and wide.
Over the next few days, Amani’s life began to change. She joined Zuri in prayer each morning by the river, and they spent hours talking about their new faith. Slowly, other villagers began to take notice. Some came to Zuri with questions, others with curiosity, and a few with anger. But no matter the response, Zuri remained steadfast, knowing that God was using her to plant seeds of faith.
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” – Acts 16:31 (ESV)
One evening, as Zuri and Amani sat by the fire outside Zuri’s home, a figure approached them. It was her brother, Kato, who had been watching her from a distance since she first returned to the village. His face was serious, but there was a softness in his eyes that Zuri hadn’t seen before.
“Zuri,” Kato began, sitting down beside them. “I’ve been thinking about what you said… about Jesus. I don’t understand it all, but I’ve seen the change in you. I see the peace in your heart, and I want to know more.”
Zuri’s heart leapt. This was the moment she had prayed for, the moment when her family would begin to open their hearts. “Kato, Jesus loves you just as He loves me. He has a plan for your life, too.”
Kato looked down at the ground, his voice barely a whisper. “Can you tell me more?”
Zuri smiled, her eyes filling with tears of joy. “Yes, brother. I can.”
