So, the next morning, Zuri woke before the sun, her heart still heavy with the memory of the voice she heard by the river. She knew she had been called, but to what? She pondered the words as she helped her family prepare for the day. Her mother hummed softly while weaving baskets, and her father, already outside, tended to their small herd of goats.

Toggle“Zuri, what’s troubling you?” her mother asked, noticing her distraction.
Zuri hesitated, unsure of how to explain what had happened. “I… I heard a voice by the river,” she began slowly. “It called me by name and told me to follow.”
Her mother paused, hands still, her eyes filled with concern. “What kind of voice? Was it a spirit?”
“I don’t think so,” Zuri replied. “It felt different like it came from God Himself. It spoke of life and love.”
Her mother looked at her closely. “Zuri, you are no longer a child. These are serious matters. Our people have always honoured the spirits of our ancestors. Be careful not to offend them by seeking something beyond what we know.”
Zuri nodded, but deep inside, she knew this was not a matter of offending spirits or tradition. The voice she had heard felt more powerful, more ancient than anything she had known. That day, her tasks felt like a blur, and as the hours passed, her heart ached with the burden of her calling. The more she thought about it, the clearer it became that she would have to leave the village and seek answers.
As night fell, Zuri packed a small bundle of food and water. Her mind was made up. The pull to follow the voice had grown stronger. She had no choice but to obey.
“Living with faith and courage is something that life requires of each of us. Never, absolutely never, give up! Never give in, no matter what! Fight it through! And I promise you something with all of my heart – God will help you.” – Kathryn Kuhlman
Before she could leave, she went to her grandmother’s hut. Her grandmother, Koko, was known as a wise woman, the keeper of stories and traditions. She was the only one Zuri felt might understand what she was going through.
Koko sat by the fire, her hands warming over the flames as she chanted softly to herself. She turned her deep, knowing eyes toward Zuri as soon as she stepped into the room. “You have a heavy heart, my child. What troubles you?”
Zuri knelt before her, tears filling her eyes. “Grandmother, I have heard a voice from God. He called me to follow Him. I feel as if I must leave, but I don’t know where to go or what will happen.”
Koko studied her for a long moment before speaking. “There is a prophecy, Zuri, one not many in our village remember. It speaks of a time when someone would hear the voice of the One True God and be called to lead our people into a new way of living. It is said this person will bring light where there is darkness and peace where there is unrest.”
Zuri’s heart raced. “Do you think that person could be me?”
“I do not know, my child,” Koko said quietly. “But the signs are there. You are not like the others. Your heart has always sought more than what this village can offer. Perhaps it is time for you to seek the truth, wherever it may lead.”
Encouraged by her grandmother’s words, Zuri hugged her tightly. “I don’t know what will happen, but I must go.”
Koko nodded, placing a small wooden cross in Zuri’s hand. “Take this with you. It belonged to a traveller who once passed through this land, speaking of the God you now hear. Let it remind you of His presence.”
With that, Zuri left the hut and made her way toward the river, her heart pounding with anticipation. She didn’t know where her journey would take her, but with each step, she felt the voice of God calling her onward, deeper into the unknown.
As she reached the edge of the village, the moonlight illuminating the path ahead, Zuri whispered a prayer to the God she now believed was guiding her. “I will follow You.”
And with that, her journey began.
