When was the last time you genuinely allowed yourself to rest? September is National Self-Care Awareness Month, a gentle reminder that looking after ourselves isnāt a luxury; itās essential. In a world that values busyness and often neglects rest, self-care helps us pause, restore balance, and live more fully. At Life Purpose Matters, we believe that self-care is very important because it is impossible to give from an empty vessel. The month of September is calling on us all (especially WOMEN!) to pay more attention and love ourselves more. Yes, it’s time to slow down, girl! And to love yourself like you never have before! ToggleScripture even encourages this balance: āDo you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spiritā¦? Therefore honour God with your bodiesā (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This month is an opportunity to commit to simple daily practices that nurture well-being.
The True Meaning of Self-Care
When life feels overwhelming, self-care gives you space to breathe. It strengthens your emotional health, protects against burnout, and improves clarity in decision-making. More importantly, it helps us remember that we are loved and valued by God, even when we feel weak. Jesus himself modelled rest, often withdrawing to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16). If He made space for renewal, how much more should we?
Common Misconceptions About Self-Care
āļø Self-care is not selfish. It equips us to serve others better. āLove your neighbour as yourselfā (Mark 12:31) assumes that we first extend care to ourselves.
āļø Self-care is not about perfection. The goal isnāt to master every practice but to be consistent.
āļø Self-care is not indulgence. Sometimes, itās as simple as drinking water, reading a book, saying āno,ā or taking a walk.

Nurturing Your Heart and Mind
Just as we care for our spiritual growth through prayer and reading God’s Word, we must care for our mental health by seeking peace and clarity, our physical health by nurturing our bodies, and our emotional health by acknowledging our feelings and seeking support when needed.Ā Biblical teaching connects our hearts and minds as the core of a our being, the source from which our life flows. Therefore, as a Christian woman, nurturing these aspects is crucial for a whole and effective life:
āļø Let go of self-criticism. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to guard our hearts.
āļø Forgive yourself when things go wrong, everyone makes mistakes. Psalm 103:12 says, āas far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from usā. If you haven’t read my book, get it here šš¾Ā Grace in Release
āļø Notice your feelings without judgment and bring them before God in prayer (Philippians 4:6ā7).
āļø Choose to see mistakes as learning opportunities (Romans 8:28).
āļø Accept yourself and remember you are worthy of love (Jeremiah 31:3).
āļø Remind yourself that you are enough, just as you are in Christ (Ephesians 2:10).
Honouring Your Body as a Temple
When you nurture your heart and mind, it is not selfish but an act of responsible stewardship over the “temple of the Holy Spirit”. This practice will strengthen your relationship with God and enable you to better love and serve others from a place of abundance rather than burnout. Caring for yourself gives you the energy and insight needed to fulfil your purpose and serve others effectively. If you neglect yourself, you’ll eventually run out of strength and can’t shine brightly for His glory.
āļø Eat well, exercise, and rest properly. Caring for the body honours the Lord (1 Corinthians 10:31).
āļø Spend time outdoors for natural refreshment. Psalm 19:1 speaks of creation declaring Godās glory.
āļø Take time to breathe and be still. Psalm 46:10 says, āBe still, and know that I am Godā.
Connecting with Others (and Yourself)
As a Christian, connecting with others and with yourself is a vital act of self-care rooted in honouring God’s creation, one’s own body and spirit, so that you can better love and serve others. It is a balanced, intentional practice that will strengthen your relationship with both God and your community. Connecting with others is both biblically and psychologically important for maintaining mental, spiritual, and emotional health. Likewise, connecting with yourself through self-reflection and care is an act of stewardship for the mind, body, and soul, which are a gift from God.
āļøShare how you feel and ask for help when you need it (Galatians 6:2).
āļø Ask a trusted friend what strengths they see in youāencouragement builds resilience (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
āļø Be kind to yourself as you would to a loved one.
These practices show that self-care doesnāt have to be grand gestures. Small, intentional choices each day can make a profound difference.
Building a Lasting Self-Care Routine
While September offers a great start, self-care is something to carry into every season. Remember. self-care is about taking care of what God has entrusted us with; this body that is made to serve Him and others. Our bodies, minds, and souls, when viewed through God’s eyes are truly gifts worth taking care of. It is therefore very crucial that as a woman you continue to build a self-care routine that lasts beyond a seasonal push. Sustainable self-care is personal and evolves with your needs, so the key is to find practices you genuinely enjoy rather than treating it as a chore.
āļø Start small. Pick one or two practices and build from there.
āļø Be consistent. Just as you schedule meetings, set aside time for rest and reflection.
āļø Reflect weekly. Journal what practices lifted your mood or helped you feel closer to God.
āļø Stay flexible. Some days will look different, and thatās fine.
Final Thoughts
Self-care is not about withdrawing from life but about entering it with renewed strength. By nurturing your body, mind, and spirit, you will live more fully and love more freely. As you step into National Self-Care Awareness Month, take the challenge to try a daily practice and reflect on how it shapes your well-being. Remember, āCome to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you restā (Matthew 11:28). Make space to care for yourself this September, because you matter, and in caring for yourself, you also honour God.
