The Power of Giving…
“At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.’ Hungry not only for bread — but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing – but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks — but homeless because of rejection.”
~ Mother Teresa
Giving is a very powerful act of kindness and it is the secret behind abundance. Ask anyone that’s living in abundance and they’ll tell you how pleasurable it is to give… that’s the power of giving!
Whilst a number of people have the notion that it is only those who have more than enough financially that should give to charity, but the truth is that giving starts form personal will – it is a thing of the heart. Giving is something that every human being regardless of financial or material standing should be doing as a way of life.
Giving is not just about monetary offering; it can be in a service rendered, material gift, making a positive impact and difference in the life people. Provided the intention is unconditional and without any expectation of a reciprocal action from the receiver, the power of giving will abound.
Unfortunately, the global economy that we are in has strained a lot of household budgets and this has made it more difficult than ever for individuals to even think about giving in any shape or form. Everyone has been forced to work with reduced resources and most of us feel as though we don’t have enough money to enjoy our own lives or enough time to give to other people just to show we are there for them. The idea of giving, during this critical period may seem unreasonable, but believe me… now, more than ever, is the best time to give.

There are so many people out there that are in need of money, material goods, just a word, a hug, a smile, a pat on the back, a friendly face, listening ear… just to name a few.
There is indeed power in giving.
Most of us have already been blessed with so much. Our parents, teachers, relatives, friends, and others have given us a lot – we have people we can turn to. But many others out there are not so fortunate.
- 25% of the world’s population is starving.
- 15% of the world’s population cannot read or write.
- 25 children die every minute from a preventable disease.
- 1.5 billion people don’t have access to clean water.
One doesn’t have to look far from home to find real need. Here in the United Kingdom, we have so many homeless people, many are for some unfortunate reasons end up sleeping rough on the streets and most end up with mental health issues that are also often let untreated. There are many people not receiving proper nutrition and health care. There are children that aren’t getting the attention they need to flourish.
In giving, you’ll discover many personal benefits:
- Opportunity to make new relationships
- A feeling of pride
- The realization that you have much more than you think
What is dangerous about not giving is the effect it has on many people. When people are in lack, they often become more isolated and less connected with society and their community. Many don’t even know their neighbors. By giving your time, you open yourself up to others and your community.
Giving Helps You Reach Your Full Potential
Muhammad Ali said: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
Our service to others has a way of exposing us to our passions and exposing the gifts that are buried inside of us. Reaching your full potential is much more likely when you give. No one can fully realize what they’re capable of without being passionate about their day-to-day activities.
A person that can’t move beyond the more superficial aspects of life can never do anything remarkable, because he will never be exposed to anything that will generate that kind of prerequisite passion.
It’s in Your Nature to Give
Every one of us is created with the nature to give, you may have forgotten but it’s there within you. Have you noticed how most children; although, some of them are all “mine, mine, and mine” but most kids are really very open to giving and they share readily. They want to take their friends everywhere with them. They want to feed the baby ducks. They want to take care of their dolls and even their baby siblings!
However, somewhere along the way… have you developed the belief that you must keep what you’ve gotten for yourself? If this is the case, you’re punishing yourself. You’re giving in to a scarcity mindset which, in itself, will limit your personal success. There is no way anyone can enjoy a blissful lifestyle without a heart of giving. To live a life of purpose you have to share your gift with the world as this is where your fulfillment is hidden.
So make a plan to give what you have. If you have time, money, or talent share with those that will benefit from them. Start a habit of giving something today and witness the impact of the power of giving on your life.
