Define what you want to achieve
What is the end result that you’re hoping for? Is it better income? Improve your relationship? Reduce your financial expenses and be more emotionally balanced? Promotion at work? Have a clear understanding the desired outcome of your decision.
Make a list of your resources
Imagine you had to make some renovations in your home. One of the things you’ll consider is which tools are available to you to do the job and then you’ll start making plans based upon those available tools. You might also purchase new tools.
- What resources do you have that are appropriate to following through on your possible options?
Brainstorm possible choices
Write down your possible option, it doesn’t matter if it seems ridiculous. Don’t dismiss any of the options that come to your mind, write them all down. You can evaluate them later.
Ponder on your chances of success
Go through your list of possible solutions and get rid of the ones that are less likely to lead to success.
Reflect on the time and money entailed
For instance, a 3-series BMW car costs much less than a 5-series BMW car. A pet parrot requires more of your time and attention than a cat.
Consider the risks involved
Bearing in mind that great opportunities often come from risk taking, in making effective decisions, you need to ask yourself, what are the risks involved and what are the consequences? Knowing the risks involved, is the option worth the risk? Obviously, some options will be riskier than others, but their likely rewards can make the extra risk worth taking. How much do you stand to gain?
Are there any long-term implications?
Making effective decisions requires you to consider the impact of that decision on not just yourself but others around you; the impact now and in the future? What are you going to reap and lose in the long-term?
Do you have the will power to follow it through?
A good decision that you can’t follow through to completion is no better than a poor decision or no decision at all. Sometimes, making effective decisions is not the problem but breaking through all barriers and challenges to implement the decision. Do you have the necessary skills and the determination to follow through your decision?
Hold onto your values
Making effective decision does not mean ignoring your values to arrive at a decision. Your values matter and so you must keep your values in mind when reaching a decision. Otherwise, you will regret that decision later; consider those things that are important to you.
Avoid taking too much time to make a solution
Avoid spending too much time than necessary searching for a solution. Imagine someone who needs to decide about which degree course to do at the university. They spent so much time trying to figure out which course that they miss the deadline to submit their application.
- Look for the quickest, easiest solution that meets your criteria. That does not mean you’re just settling anything but that you accepted the first solution that best satisfies your needs and are running with it.
- If you carry on searching until the best possible solution is found, you might never find it.
Making effective decisions is very crucial if you want to avoid unnecessary life challenges and battles. A lot of people spend so much time trying to arriving at a decision that they end up making bad decisions or no decision. Not making decision will lead to lack of progress. Those who are successful in life make wise decisions, they don’t delay in making decisions and they always follow their decisions through. Developing the quality and speed at which you make your decisions will help you in creating a happier and fulfilling life.
